What is a neuropsychological assessment?

Neuropsychological assessments are often requested if someone has had a brain injury, been diagnosed with a neurological condition, such as MS or MND or have been diagnosed with ADHD and they are struggling at work or having problems doing day to day activities such as managing money, shopping or cooking.

Sometimes people have not been diagnosed with a neurological condition, but have concerns about their brain health; their thinking (e.g. repeated concussions or they have noted ongoing changes). In such cases, a neuropsychological assessment can provide information about their functioning.

What does a neuropsychological assessment involve?

At Edinburgh Neuropsychology we offer specialist neuropsychological assessments that may involve:

  1. A review of relevant medical records - You may be asked to provide letters and reports that relate to your current problems.

  2. A clinical Interview - This involves a conversation between you and the clinician where they will ask you questions about what you are struggling with and your background.

  3. A conversation with someone who knows you well - Sometimes it is helpful for the clinician to speak to someone who knows you well, to get their opinion on your concerns. This will only be done with your consent.

  4. Psychometric tests - These are standardised tests that involve paper and pencil tasks, the answering of questions and the manipulation of objects such as blocks. They can also be computer-based tasks.

  5. Psychological questionnaires - You may be asked to complete a few brief questionnaires about anxiety, depression, trauma and fatigue.

  6. Written report - You will receive a detailed written report at the end of the assessment containing the results of the assessment and treatment recommendations.

  7. Feedback session - We offer a feedback session where we can discuss the results of the assessment and provide information about your brain injury or illness. You will have the opportunity to ask questions and we can discuss treatment options. You are welcome to bring someone with you.

How long does a neuropsychological assessment last?

The clinical interview and psychometric tests will usually take about 3 hours to complete. They can take place over a number of sessions if required.

How do I prepare for an assessment?

Sometimes people feel anxious about the assessment but we can reassure that most people relax quickly once it has begun and many quite enjoy the process. We can address any questions or worries you have before we begin.

On the day of the assessment try to be well-rested, bring your glasses if you need them and bring a relative or someone who knows you well, if you wish.

What do I get in the end?

You will receive an in person feedback session and a detailed written report that you can share with your family and/or medical team.

How much will it cost?

The cost of a neuropsychological assessment will be dependent on whether psychometric testing is required and will be in the region of £1200.

What is cognitive rehabilitation?

Cognitive rehabilitation aims to help people to live with, manage and come to terms with changes that occur following a brain injury or as the result of a neurological condition. Your clinician will work with you to help you identify goals that are important to you. Edinburgh Neuropsychology provides specialist cognitive rehabilitation with a therapeutic focus that has psychological support interwoven into it. You will feel both psychological supported whilst developing new skills to manage cognitive problems.

Will you also support my family?

Yes, we work with individuals, couples and families. Your bespoke cognitive rehabilitation package can support all those who are affected by your difficulties.

I already have a case manager. Will that affect our work together?

Dr Gillanders and Dr Poveda have extensive experience of neurorehabilitation and have worked with case managers and multidisciplinary teams throughout their career. With your consent, we can work closely with any other rehabilitation specialists and professionals who are supporting you.

Can you give me some examples of what cognitive rehabilitation involves?

Knowledge is power and even just understanding more about your condition and cognition can help you to feel empowered and able to manage your difficulties. Edinburgh Neuropsychology can provide you with detailed information about your brain injury or neurological condition and the particular cognitive strengths and difficulties you have.

We use a compensatory approach to help you develop skills to manage your cognitive problems and to find other ways to complete tasks that you find difficult. The techniques will be guided by your goals and might include using your mobile phone in a different way. For example, we can help you use the technology you already have to remember to take your medication on time, attend appointments, navigate in the community, communicate with others etc. Rehabilitation might also include developing new study skills or ways or multitasking at work.

There are many other examples but you will get a bespoke rehabilitation package to meet your specific needs and goals.

How much will it cost?

A 60 minute cognitive rehabilitation session costs £150. There may be additional costs associated with travel and liaison with colleagues and an agreed price can be provided on enquiry.
