What is psychological therapy?
Psychological therapy is sometimes also called “talking therapy”, which is a better description of what it is. Psychological therapy gives you the opportunity to talk about your feelings in a safe, supportive and non-judgmental space. You and your therapist can work together to help you understand more about your feelings, develop ways to look after your mental health and help you feel more in control of your life.
At Edinburgh Neuropsychology, we specialise in providing psychological therapy to people with brain injuries, spinal cord injuries and neurological conditions. We understand how such injuries and conditions can affect the areas of the brain associated with emotion as well as the impact the conditions can have on your life.
We appreciate that brain and spinal injuries can lead to changes in relationships, employment, hobbies, mobility, cognitive abilities, physical appearance, pain, fatigue, sleep, loss of independence and more. We understand how these difficulties can affect your mental health and self-identity.
Neuropsychologists understand the biological, psychological and social effects of neurological conditions on mental health and are well placed to help you reduce your distress, learn how to look after your mental health and live a full life despite your illness or injury.
What does psychological therapy involve?
We offer a free 15 minute consultation to find out more about your situation and decide with you whether it would be helpful to move forward with therapy. Just fill out the form on this website and we will arrange a time to call you.
If you decide to proceed, your first appointment will last for 60 minutes and will involve a more detailed assessment of your emotional well-being, neurological condition and background. We will discuss what your goals are for therapy and agree on the number and frequency of sessions. Some treatment plans are quite brief and may involve up to six sessions where others are longer and may last for 20 or more. This will be discussed with you.
Therapy can also be adapted if you have cognitive problems such as poor memory, poor concentration or language problems. We have a great deal of experience of working with people with moderate to severe cognitive difficulties and can provide therapy that is bespoke and meets your needs.
What conditions do you work with?
We work with people who have a range of difficulties including:
Adjustment
Anxiety
Bereavement and loss
